Between Bali and Lombok, three small islands catch the eye of travellers : Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno.
Each one has its own personality, its own pace, its own crowd. Gili Trawangan draws the party people and beginner divers. Gili Air is calmer, more balanced. And then there's Gili Meno, right in the middle, the smallest, the most low-key, the one you pick when you really need to switch off.
A world without engines
No cars, no scooters, no horns. On Gili Meno, we get around on foot, by bike, or by cidomo, small horse-drawn carts. It’s a way of life that’s part of the island, and you get used to it fast.
What you hear instead : hooves on sand, wind in the palm trees, the sea. At night, it's even more striking. No engines, no harsh lights. Just the moon and the stars.
A human-sized island
Two kilometres long, one wide. You can walk the whole thing in under an hour. There are paths lined with coconut trees, small houses, and smiling people. The locals, mostly from Lombok, live off fishing, crafts, and their little warungs where you can eat nasi goreng or grilled fish of the day.
The interior of the island is worth exploring too. Dirt paths, gardens, cows in the shade, cats on the walls. It's calm, a little out of time. On this island, living simply isn't a lack, it's just how things work. Time passes differently, you swim, you read, and you look at the sea.
The atmosphere of Gili Meno
Unlike its neighbours, Gili Meno stays calm. Few people, little noise. It's the kind of island that attracts couples, people looking for something authentic, those who are tired of overly touristy places.
The seabed is among the most beautiful in the region, with colorful corals and turtles that swim peacefully on the white sand. Here, snorkeling or scuba diving is often a solitary
activity, a true encounter with the fish. You can rent a mask and snorkel for almost nothing, enter the water from the beach, and meet turtles within minutes.
There are also the underwater statues, a submerged art installation accessible by snorkeling. Corals have started to cover them, and fish live between the sculptures. It's a bit surreal to see.
Views that stay
In the morning, soft pink light on Lombok and Mount Rinjani in the distance. In the evening, the sun going down behind Bali, orange and red. In between, life is slow.
You walk around the small salt lake in the center of the island, surrounded by mangroves and birds. you drink a fresh juice watching a boat go by, you fall asleep in a hammock. Even the Wi-Fi is bad and honestly, that's fine.
A Night on the Island
Gili Meno at night is something else. No nightclubs, no music echoing until dawn like on Gili Trawangan. A few bars open by the water, tables on the sand, lanterns, and a guitarist playing softly in a corner. You order a drink, you talk to the people next to you, travellers like yourself, often couples, often there for the same reason.
Around 10 p.m., the island is almost silent. You walk back in the dark, with a flashlight if you remembered to bring one. The sky is clear, the stars are visible like you rarely see them. It's the kind of night where you stop for two minutes just to look up, nothing more needed.
An island that hasn't changed too much
Gili Meno has not become a tourist factory. The corals are still alive, the beaches are clean, and there is a real local effort to protect sea turtles. A sanctuary on the island collects the eggs, raises the baby turtles, then releases them into the ocean. You can go see them, donate a few rupiahs, watch a release if you're lucky. It's one of the simplest and most memorable things you can do here.
That respect for the island, shared by locals and visitors, is what gives it its character.
" Gili Meno is the soul of the archipelago. The island where you arrive stressed and leave changed. "
