Bali vs France: a contrasting culinary experience
Bali, the paradise island of Indonesia, offers unique food, combining tradition and exoticism. I have always lived in France, and one day I needed to know something else, another culture so I came to this island. So today I can compare these two different
Balinese flavors: spices and simplicity
Balinese cuisine is based on traditional dishes with intense flavors, often prepared with fresh ingredients and local spices. Essentials such as nasi goreng (fried rice) or satay (meat skewers with peanut sauce) illustrate this richness.
Unlike France, where gastronomy emphasizes complex preparations, Bali favors simplicity and the abundant use of spices such as turmeric, galangal or chili pepper.
Another central ingredient is rice, which accompanies almost every meal. In France, rice is often one side dish among others, but in Bali, it is at the heart of the plate, symbolizing the basis of food culture.
Cultural differences and eating habits
In France, meals are often seen as a social and structured moment, with a succession of starters, main courses and desserts. In Bali, I found out many Balinese restaurant do not really offer starters or desserts but straight to main course.
Local markets play a central role: there are street food stands offering quick, tasty and economical dishes. The contrast with France is striking, particularly in terms of variety and price.
However, one common point remains: the passion for authentic taste. Whether in Bali or France, locals seek out dishes that reflect their region and culture.
In conclusion: an enriching culinary journey
